Fresh Light on Old Newspapers

Date: June 26 Time: 2:00 PM Stream A

A long time genealogist, Dave researches his Eastern European family and their lives on the prairies. A member of the Ancestry Canada Advisory Board, Dave is also full time Editor and Publisher of the Times Colonist in Victoria, B.C. He was instrumental in the digitization of the Times Colonist which can be found on the Internet Archive – all free access. Read about the project here – Victoria Daily Times newspapers now digital. Read all about it.

Victoria Daily Times 1884 – 1940

Dave has written many books on Canadian Genealogy, amongst them are: Counting Canada : a genealogical guide to the Canadian Census; Destination Canada, a Genealogical Guide to Immigration Records; Royal Oak Burial Park : a History and Guide ; Finding Your Canadian Ancestors : a Beginner’s Guide – co-authored with Sherry Irvine. Discover more on his Books page.

If you are looking for ancestors who worked on or owned farms on the Canadian prairies, I often recommend his free downloadable article – ‘Back to the Land: A Genealogical Guide to Finding Farms on the Canadian Prairies‘ – Second edition – also found on the Books page.

Dave is in demand as a speaker and has over 3 dozen talks in five categories to choose from: General, Canada, Europe, England and Technology.

A few that intrigue: A Sense of Place and Time: Putting Ancestors in Context – how to find the resources that give an understanding of the geography and history in the lives of your ancestors. Looking Forward, Looking Back: Half a century of genealogy, and the best is yet to come – Technology and it’s impact on genealogy research and how we have been impacted by this enigma overall.

Personally, I don’t know how he keeps up with all of his interests, maybe he could give a talk on work life balance!
