June 26 – 11:00 AM – Stream A – Jewish Canadians in the Spanish Civil War

Summary

Michael Petrou, a historian at the Canadian War Museum, tells the story of Canadian Jews who volunteered to fight fascism in the Spanish Civil War.

Outline

Among the 35,000 people from all over the world who volunteered to fight fascism in Spain during that country’s civil war from 1936 to 1939, a disproportionate number were Jews. This is true of the 1,600 or so Canadians who took part in the struggle. Why did they do so? A seemingly obvious answer presents itself: as Jews, they were uniquely aware of the threat fascism posed to them and to the world and resolved to do something about it. Was this true in 1936, or are our perceptions today shaped by knowledge of the Holocaust that and the horrors of the Second World War that proceeded Spain’s civil war? Michael Petrou, a historian at the Canadian War Museum and expert on the Spanish Civil War, will explore these questions.
